‚ÄčSubmission Guidelines

These brief guidelines explain the details for submission of stories, poems, artwork/photography, and creative nonfiction to Odet. Please read through this document carefully before submitting work for consideration, as well as the associated Submission Agreement located on our website.

Theme: Discovery

We are looking for stories, essays, poems, and artwork and photographs that touch upon the theme in some way.

Format (all writing):

Please format your submission in 12-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced for poetry and double-spaced for prose. Set margins for one inch on all sides. Number your pages, and include your full name and the title in the header of each page. Underline words that should appear in italics. This will make it easier for us during final formatting for the journal. We will accept .doc .docx or .rtf formats only.

Prose:

  • Maximum 2500 words
  • Indent each new paragraph one-half inch from the left margin.
  • Do not use an extra space between paragraphs

Poetry:

  • Submit up to three poems, with a maximum combined length of up to five pages.
  • Include all poems in one document.
  • Format the poems as you would like them to appear in print while still adhering to margins described above (for example, a concrete poem).

Photography/art:

Submissions should be sent separately from written submissions. Art and photography selected for publication will require a high-resolution scan.
In a change from our first edition, we plan to print the next volume of Odet in color, and seek color artwork and photography. Color submissions should be 300 ppi, with lines per inch of 180, and the "color space" to be CMYK.  Line art should be 600 ppi for 1-bit B&W line art and 300 ppi for 8-bit grayscale continuous-tone images, and be in "grayscale" with 106 lines per inch.

Submission Guidelines:

Please submit your work via email attachment to OdetJournal@gmail.com. Include the category of content in the header. For example: 2017 Odet photo submission / 2017 Odet non-fiction submission / 2017 Odet poetry submission. / 2017 Odet fiction submission.  / 2017 Odet essay submission.

We are limiting submissions to Florida residents only and ask that you provide a brief bio (40 to 75 words) in the body of your email. Please also include a phone number and a mailing address so that we can send your copy after publication, should your submission be accepted. We will not use your information for any other reason than to contact you, mail the journal, and/or issue payment of the first or second prize in the Romeo Lemay Contest, which has been merged this year with Odet(see contest information below).

Submission dates: March 3 to July 10, 2017.

Judging:

Judges are a team of writers, poets and editors of Odet. We enjoy stories that entertain, enlighten and surprise us. We are not limiting you on how you express yourself, but we will likely choose poems and essays that are well written, carefully edited, and adhere to the above guidelines. Photographs and art will be chosen on subject matter and unique point of view.

All submissions will be considered anonymously. Our editors will not see the names of the author of each submission even though we ask that you include it in the header of your submission.

If your work is accepted for publication, you will be notified by e-mail or phone on or before October 1, 2017. Published authors will receive one copy of the issue in which their work appears. The Romeo Lemay contest will award one prose winner $150 and one poetry winner $150. Two second place winners, one in prose and one in poetry, will each receive $75. We will also award a prize of $100 for the photograph or art work chosen for the cover of Odet. Two honorable mentions will be awarded $25 and are not limited to specific categories.
